Rev up your engines and chisel that wood, its Pinewood Derby time! This event is everyone’s favorite once the cars have been built and are racing down the track.
From a single block of wood, each Cub builds their own idea of a racer, and then puts it up against the whole pack to see who has the fastest, the most creative, or the most scout-like.
Created by a Cub Master in 1953, Pinewood Derbies have excited Cub Scouts. They begin by choosing a car design, then carve it out and detail it with paint, decals and other accessories, and lastly, perfect strategies to compete in the Pinewood Derby. It's a wonderful learning experience centered on teamwork, ingenuity, and sportsmanship.
A Pinewood Derby car can reach a speed of nearly 20mph, and if a derby car and track were enlarged to the size of a real automobile the car would be speeding at more than 200mph!
